Don’t Disobey God: The Cost of Ignoring His Voice
Scripture Focus: 1 Samuel 14:37
“And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? Wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.” — 1 Samuel 14:37 (KJV)
When Heaven Is Silent
One of the most sobering moments in Scripture occurs when King Saul seeks guidance from God, but receives no answer. Saul had asked whether he should continue pursuing the Philistines, yet God remained silent.
This silence was not because God lacked power or concern. It was because there was unresolved disobedience among His people. Saul had previously made a rash oath, and Jonathan unknowingly violated it. Before God would give direction, the issue of disobedience had to be addressed.
God desires to lead His people, but He also calls them to walk in obedience. When we knowingly ignore His commands, we should not expect to enjoy the peace and clarity that come from living in close fellowship with Him.
Obedience Opens the Door
Throughout the Bible, God consistently blesses those who obey Him.
Jesus said:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15 (KJV)
Obedience is not about earning God’s love—it is our response to His love. A heart that trusts God will desire to follow Him, even when His instructions are difficult.
The Danger of Selective Obedience
King Saul’s life illustrates that partial obedience is still disobedience.
Later, God instructed Saul to completely destroy the Amalekites, yet Saul chose to spare King Agag and keep the best livestock. He believed his reasoning was justified, but God saw it as rebellion.
Samuel declared:
“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” — 1 Samuel 15:22 (KJV)
God values surrendered hearts more than impressive religious activities.
Signs We May Be Disobeying God
Sometimes disobedience is obvious, while other times it is subtle.
Ask yourself:
- Am I ignoring something God has already shown me in His Word?
- Have I delayed obeying because it feels inconvenient?
- Am I justifying actions that Scripture clearly calls sin?
- Am I asking God for new direction while refusing to obey His previous instructions?
God often calls us to obey what He has already revealed before He reveals what comes next.
The Blessing of Repentance
The good news is that God’s silence does not have to be permanent.
When we confess our sins and turn back to Him, He is faithful to forgive us.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 (KJV)
Repentance restores fellowship with God. His grace is always available to those who come to Him with humble hearts.
Living a Life of Obedience
Walking with God means choosing His will every day. Obedience may require sacrifice, patience, or courage, but it always leads to spiritual growth and deeper fellowship with Him.
As believers, our goal should not simply be to hear God’s voice, but to respond faithfully when He speaks.
Reflection
Is there an area of your life where God has already made His will clear, yet you have delayed obeying? Today is the perfect time to surrender that area to Him. Don’t wait for another answer while ignoring the one He has already given.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word that guides and corrects me. Forgive me for the times I have chosen my own way instead of Yours. Give me a humble heart that delights in obeying You, even when it is difficult. Help me to trust that Your commands are always for my good. May my life honor You through faithful obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
